Growing up, Sloppy Joes were on our supper rotation about every 8 weeks or so. My mom used the canned sauce. I’m really not sure why she didn’t make them homemade because she was a wonderful cook. I haven’t bought the canned kind in at least 10 years. Homemade is so much better. Sloppy Joes are great for a large crowd, and everyone loves them. I like to make a batch of Rotel cheese dip to serve alongside mine, and skillet grilling or toasting the hamburger bun is a must.
Homemade Sloppy Joes
Ingredients:
2 pounds 80/20 ground beef
1 onion, chopped
2 tablespoons minced garlic
1/2 cup red wine vinegar
1 14.5 ounce can tomato sauce
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Directions:
In a large skillet, brown the meat. Drain off the fat and then add back to your pan. Add in the onions and cook about 5 minutes. Add in the garlic and cook a couple more minutes. Add the remaining ingredients to the pan. Simmer about 30 minutes. Adjust your seasonings. Add a little water if it’s too thick.
Lou and I recently celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary. Friday Night Porch Parties have been a party of our family life since the beginning. It's my favorite night of the week.
