I lost my mother in October of 2008 and my dad in January of 2009. I still think of them daily. Sometime prior to their deaths, my dad showed me a small safe he kept in a closet and where he had hidden the key. He explained he kept cash in the box to pay for his and mother’s funerals. Since Mother died first, I wasn’t involved in paying for her funeral, but after Daddy died, I had to go to the box. Y’all, we found 20 small white envelopes each with $1000 cash. After paying for the funeral expenses and sharing with my two brothers, I told Lou that I was pretty sure Papaw wanted me to have a Big Green Egg grill. Lou replied, “Well, I’m pretty sure he wants me to have a new pair of cowboy boots as well.” We both laughed and obliged ourselves. Many years later, I’m still enjoying my grill Papaw bought me. Before then, I had not cooked much barbeque, so I had a lot to learn. My new grill came with an instruction book and a small cookbook. This rub recipe was in that cookbook, and I still use it today. I keep a jar in the cabinet for ribs, Boston butts and turkeys. I think you’ll enjoy it too.
